Tag The Map is in beta. You may hit the odd rough edge, and we would genuinely like to hear about it. Tell us what you think.

Session limits and how to get more

What the three limits on a Tag The Map account are, why they exist, and what to do if you need more.

Hosting a session comes with three limits. None of them is there to upsell you, and all three can be raised by asking. This page explains what each one covers and what to do if it is not enough.

The three limits

  • Sessions you can run at once. How many of your sessions can be live at the same time. Ending a session frees the slot immediately.
  • People who can join a session. How many participants one of your sessions will admit, including you.
  • Tags each person can place. How many pins any one participant can drop on the map during a session.

Where to see your own numbers

Open your sessions dashboard and start a new session. The dialog shows all three of your limits before you create anything, so you can check them while you are planning rather than discovering them in front of a room.

We do not print the numbers on this page deliberately. They are set per account, so the figures in your dialog are yours and may not match anybody else's.

Your session runs on your limits

Whatever your limits are, they apply to everyone in a session you host. A participant who happens to have an account of their own does not bring their own allowance into your session, and most participants have no account at all. That is what makes the number in your dialog the number that actually applies.

You can set a session lower than your limit

The participant and tag figures in the create dialog are editable. If you are running a session for a team of eight, you can cap it at eight, and the session code will then admit eight people rather than your full allowance. Leaving a box blank means "whatever I am allowed", and keeps tracking your allowance if it changes later.

What happens when a limit is reached

  • Session count: you are told you are using all your active sessions. End one and you can start another straight away.
  • People: the session stops admitting new participants. Nobody already in the session is removed, including if you lower the cap after they joined.
  • Tags: that participant cannot place another pin. Pins already on the map stay exactly where they are.

Why there are limits at all

A session is genuinely live. Every participant holds an open connection for as long as they are on the map, and every pin is pushed to everyone else as it lands. That is what makes it work in a room full of people, and it is also why capacity is not free.

Tag The Map is small and self funded. The limits keep it affordable to run and responsive for the sessions that are already going, rather than being a paywall with a price list behind it.

If you need more

Get in touch and say roughly what you are running and when. A one off event with a large group is usually the easiest thing to accommodate, and knowing the date helps.

If Tag The Map is useful to you and you would like to support it, that is welcome too, and supporters get more generous limits. Neither is a requirement for asking.

Reconnecting to your session...

You were away for a while, so the live connection closed. Your session and every tag on it are safe. Rejoin to carry on where you left off.
